WHAT IS THREAD COUNT?
Thread count is quite simply the number of horizontal and vertical threads in one square inch of fabric. The vertical threads are called Warp and the horizontal threads are called the Weft.
Thread count has long been misrepresented by bedding manufacturers to mislead customers and used widely as a marketing gimmick. Sheets with a higher thread count do not necessarily mean high quality sheets. Imagine jamming 400 vertical and 400 horizontal threads into a square inch – the result (most definitely) is a heavier and thicker set of sheets.
WHAT IS PLY AND DOES IT MATTER TO THREAD COUNT?
A ply is the number of strands in a thread. A single ply yarn is a single strand made from strong long staple cotton fibers. A multi-ply yarn is made from 2 or more strands. Often thread counts are inflated by manufacturers by using inferior 2-3 ply yarn and counting each ply as a thread (ex. 300 count fabric made from 2 ply thread, advertised as 600 thread count).
Fabric woven with a single ply yarn results in a light and breathable fabric, which in turn make the finest, durable bedding. Inferior multi-ply yarns typically result in thick and course sheets that restrict air flow.
QUALITIES OF A GOOD SET OF SHEETS
Here is what you should be looking for in a great set of sheets:
- A true thread count of 250-350 is the optimal count according to bedding experts. This allows the required softness as well as great air flow.
- Fine single ply yarn made from extra-long staple cotton fibers.
- Sheets processed without the use of artificial softeners, anti-wrinkle finishes and toxic color dyes.
